How to Start an Affiliate Program for an AI or SaaS Tool
Prices and terms checked: October 6, 2026
To start an affiliate program for a SaaS or AI tool, first confirm you have paying customers who stay. Then pick a platform that fits your billing, set a commission (often 25–30% for 12 months), write terms with disclosure rules, and hand-recruit 30–50 creators who already teach your users. Activate each one within 7 days.
Key takeaways
- Check readiness first: self-serve signup, public pricing and customers who keep paying.
- Software is the easy part. Public plans cost $49–$300 a month.
- Recruit by hand. The top 10% of affiliates drive 58.5% of referred revenue (FirstPromoter).
- The first week matters: half of eventual referrers make their first referral within 7 days of joining (FirstPromoter).
- Expect 6–12 months to meaningful revenue (Rewardful).
Are you ready for an affiliate program?
- Self-serve signup and public pricing
- Paying customers, and a product a creator can demo on screen
- Retention you can live with. In ChartMogul data, AI-native products under $50 a month keep 23% of revenue after a year, $50–$249 keep 45%, and over $250 keep 70% (Growth Unhinged)
- Enough margin to pay 20–30% of a customer's revenue for a year
- Someone who can approve partners and answer their questions within two days
If you sell only through sales calls and annual contracts, a referral or reseller program usually fits better.
Step 1: Choose your affiliate platform
| Your billing setup | Good starting platform | Public price |
|---|---|---|
| Stripe or Paddle | Tolt or Rewardful | Tolt $69–$199; Rewardful $49–$149+ a month |
| Chargebee, Recurly or Braintree | FirstPromoter | $49–$149 a month |
| Stripe, and you want payouts and 1099s handled | Dub Partners | $90–$300 a month plus a 5% payout fee |
| Sales-led B2B | PartnerStack or impact.com | Quote-based; impact.com from $30 a month plus 2.5% of partner-driven transactions |
Tolt's homepage lists Chargebee, but its pricing FAQ says Stripe or Paddle only, so confirm Chargebee support with Tolt before you commit. Tolt's Growth plan and up collect W-9 and W-8 forms and file 1099s. The 1099-NEC threshold is $2,000 for payments made in 2026 and later (IRS).
Step 2: Set your commission
Pick one simple offer to start:
- Recurring: 25–30% for 12 months. Best for tools at $30 a month or more with decent retention.
- Flat bounty: $25–$100, or one month's price, paid after the customer has paid for 30–60 days. Best for cheap or high-churn tools.
- Hybrid: a flat fee plus commission, for proven creators only.
If your gross margin is under the commission rate plus 10 points, drop to 20% for 12 months or use a flat bounty. Add tiers after month 3. See our commission benchmarks for what 20 AI and SaaS tools pay.
Step 3: Write affiliate terms and an approved-claims list
Your terms should cover:
- Disclosure. The FTC says "Paid link" next to the link is adequate, and a disclosure only in a video description is "not enough on its own" (FTC). Creators should say it in the video.
- Claims. Ban income claims and any capability claim you haven't approved. The FTC's Operation AI Comply targeted income claims tied to AI tools.
- Brand bidding. 96% of fraud flags in FirstPromoter's data come from paid-ad traffic. Ban bidding on your brand name.
- Holds and clawbacks. Hold first commissions 30–60 days and claw back on refunds.
Have a lawyer review the final terms.
Step 4: Build the signup page and a swipe kit
The signup page states who the program is for, the commission, the cookie window, the payout schedule and the rules. Each partner type gets its own swipe kit: talking points, the approved-claims list, demo clips, thumbnails and an exclusive discount code.
Step 5: Recruit partners by hand
Open signups rarely produce sellers. Across 2,847 programs, only 7.6% of affiliates refer anyone and 1.28% make a sale (Rewardful). Go to the people who already teach your users:
- YouTube tutorial and review channels in your category
- Creators who already review your competitors
- Newsletter writers
- Coaches, course creators and community owners
- LinkedIn creators, for business tools
Lead with what they earn, offer a free pro account, and keep the pitch short. We're also building the Speria Scaling Creator Network, a free opt-in list of creators who want first access to early affiliate deals from the tools we launch (learn more).
Step 6: Activate in the first 7 days
Half of the affiliates who ever refer do it within 7 days of joining (FirstPromoter). Send each new partner their link and the fastest path to a first sale on day one. Check in at day 7 and day 30. Move people who haven't posted to a quarterly nudge list.
Step 7: Track the numbers that matter
Track partners who made a sale, content pieces live, and net affiliate revenue after refunds and chargebacks. Ignore total signups. Expect some clawbacks: FirstPromoter found 2.55% of gross commission value is reversed.
A 90-day launch timeline
| Weeks | Focus | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Audit and design | Platform chosen; commission, terms and claims list written |
| 2–4 | Setup | Platform connected to billing; signup page and swipe kits live |
| 3–12 | Recruiting | Target: 30–50 vetted partners recruited |
| Ongoing | Activation | Each partner onboarded within 7 days; target of 10+ content pieces live by day 90 |
Mistakes that stall new programs
- Opening a signup page and waiting for affiliates to arrive
- Lifetime commissions on a product with high churn
- No disclosure rules or claims list
- Measuring signups instead of partners who sold

FAQ
SaaS affiliate software costs about $49–$300 a month on public plans from Tolt, FirstPromoter, Rewardful and Dub. You also pay commissions on the sales affiliates bring in. Agency help is optional.
Rewardful's benchmarks put AI and ML programs at 6–12 months to meaningful revenue, reaching 15–25% of MRR once established.
Start with 25–30% for each customer's first 12 months. The average across 2,847 SaaS programs is 24.16% (Rewardful), and the median percentage rate in our 20-program benchmark table is 30%.
Fewer than you think. In FirstPromoter's data, the top 10% of affiliates drive 58.5% of referred revenue. Hand-pick 30–50 strong partners instead of collecting hundreds of signups.
Yes. The FTC says "Paid link" next to the link is adequate. In videos, creators should say it in the video, because a description-only disclosure isn't enough on its own.
